Jono, Rob and I - the three founders of LifeJacket - have always been outdoors people. We're definitely not at the extreme end of the spectrum and we'd probably all like to be outside more than we are. But indoor pursuits have never been our thing.
So, it was always important to us that LifeJacket's soul was about being outside, about encouraging people to be outside and about the positivity of being outside. Not just elite athletes and born explorers but everybody.
Why outside?
At the time of writing this, the global pandemic is ongoing. If we've learnt anything recently, it's that we all crave to be outside. Being locked up inside is like a pressure cooker for our bodies and minds. And science supports this. A study at the University of East Anglia - which compiled the results of 140 other studies, involving just under 300 million people - found that exposure to green space reduces the risk of type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, premature death, pre-term birth, stress and high blood pressure.
In a modern world, everyday life, digital technology and stress are combining to place our bodies and minds under intense physical and mental strain. Through this lifestyle, I passionately feel we're steadily marching our way towards weaker bodies, poor spinal alignment and coronary disease. Like a ticking time bomb...
We believe that being outside is the antidote.
Moving your body, connecting with people, detaching from devices, seeing what's around you, taking stock and breathing from deep within can help to unwind the impact of the everyday.
Our pledge
If you've found your way here, you're probably on a similar wavelength. Outside may already be your natural habitat. Or, you might be after more.
Either way, this post is our manifesto.
For the benefit of your overall health, our goal is for you to take life outside.
This manifesto is our promise to support you and how we plan to do it.
To start with, we'll publish regular ideas or suggestions on our LifeJournal for how you can take life outside. We'll do the research so you don't have to.
We'll be interviewing our ambassadors and friends and share that with you on our podcast and social. Hopefully, their stories will inspire you to get outside in different ways.
And finally, we've started to plan #TakeLifeOutside events across the UK. Whoever wants to join is welcome.
