Biologically, your skin has evolved to deal with a number of external factors. But in today's world our skin is constantly under attack from invisible enemies: airborne pollutants.
These tiny, often microscopic particles lurk in city air, traffic fumes, cigarette smoke, and even natural sources like wildfires. While we can’t always see them, their effects on our skin are real—and backed by science.
Obviously this “particulate matter” is now firmly part of modern life. You’ll face less of it if you live and work in the countryside but for the vast majority of people who live in towns and cities, it’s simply another factor in the daily battle our skin faces to maintain balance and protect you on the inside.
The Science Behind Airborne Pollutants and Skin Damage
According to recent studies, airborne pollutants, including particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are proven to accelerate skin aging, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation.
The first major study that established a link between exposure to particulate matter and skin damage, identified and explained how diesel exhaust particles, specifically, can corrupt cell metabolism. Cell metabolism is a term to describe everything that happens within a cell allowing it to undertake all essential processes. So, it's pretty fundamental!
Generally speaking, research confirms that airborne pollutants penetrate the skin barrier and trigger oxidative stress, leading to:
-
Collagen breakdown and wrinkles: Free radicals from pollutants attack collagen and elastin, weakening the skin’s structure and accelerating fine lines and sagging.
-
Inflammation and sensitivity: Exposure to NO₂ and PM increases skin sensitivity, triggering redness, irritation, and worsening conditions like eczema and acne.
-
Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation: Studies link pollution exposure to increased melanin production, resulting in dark spots, dullness, and uneven skin texture.
The worst part? Pollution-induced skin stress is a year-round threat.
Using ingredient technology to help solve the problem
With studies showing that airborne pollutants can cause damage to the skin, we tried hard to find ingredient technology that could counteract pollution damage and include it in one of our products. It made sense to us to include it in our Daily Repair Moisturiser given this product is designed to be used in the evening for recovery and repair.
To help your skin fight back, we utilised a key technology that can neutralise pollutants and in doing so, protect your skin from collagen degradation (causing wrinkles), melanin overstimulation (causing dark spots) and inflammation (causing redness and sensitivity).
That chemical 'tech' comes in the form of Benzylidene. This key ingredient is a pollution neutraliser that binds to the many pollutants our skin is exposed to, preventing them from penetrating into the dermis. Critically, it can also repair damage from UVB radiation.
The power of benzylidene in pollution protection
Not all skincare ingredients are equipped to combat pollution damage, but Benzylidene is one that stands out.
This powerhouse ingredient is a photostable antioxidant and UV filter, making it an effective defence against environmental stressors. Here’s how it works:
-
Neutralizes Free Radicals – Benzylidene acts as an antioxidant shield, helping to counteract oxidative stress caused by pollution exposure.
-
Strengthens the Skin Barrier – By preventing pollutant particles from penetrating deeply, it helps reinforce the skin’s natural defenses.
-
Boosts UV Protection – As a secondary UV filter, Benzylidene provides an extra layer of protection against sun and pollution-induced damage.
How to Defend Your Skin Every Day
Shielding your skin from pollution isn’t complicated—small, smart steps make a big difference:
-
Cleanse thoroughly – Remove pollutants and impurities daily with a gentle but effective cleanser.
-
Moisturise at the end of the day – Use a moisturiser like our Daily Repair Moisturiser that can neutralise damage before it starts.
-
Lock in Protection – A high-quality SPF isn’t just for sunny days—UV rays and pollutants work together to damage your skin, so daily sun protection is essential.
