What UV actually does.
UVA makes up 95% of UV reaching Earth and penetrates deeper than UVB. It's present all year - intensity drops in winter, but it's there whenever it's light. That's why daily SPF is a year-round habit.
UVB causes most visible sunburn. Levels vary by time of day and season.
Long-term UVA and UVB exposure ages skin and contributes to skin cancer.
Understanding SPF.
SPF measures how well sunscreen protects from sunburn. It's based on how much longer skin takes to redden with sunscreen versus without - under lab conditions.
Don't treat it as a timer. Real life isn't a lab. That's why we recommend SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50+ whenever possible.
Without sunscreen, skin might burn in ten minutes. Multiply by SPF - SPF 30 gives thirty times longer. SPF 50+ gives a better margin of safety.
